Well I've been neglecting the blog over the past few weeks as I have been travelling again.
Travelling brings back the pain of security checks at airports and the inane hunting through camera bags by customs and security officials, who I'm sure dont really know what their looking for but want to check out the kit you have in your bag and often ask "is that the latest N...n camera?" as if its the first time they have asked the question.....
So seeing this is rather apt at the moment......
If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn't need to lug around a camera. ~Lewis Hine
Tells it all really eh.............

Graduation.....
Well I went to my first High School Graduation ceremony last night which was enlightening in many ways. The key note speaker was the one for me though as he gave the graduating students a number of thoughts to take with them on their journey through their working and adult lives. Namely that one never stops learning throughout life and how true that statement really is.
However, what has that got to do with art and photography, well I saw this quote by another unnamed author and it set me thinking about what was said at the ceremony last night.
"I think a photography class should be a requirement in all educational programs because it makes you see the world rather than just look at it." ~Author Unknown
and really how true is that quotation?.................perhaps a class or two in photography and photographic appreciation would'nt come a miss afterall and perhaps it would send us on our way to continued learning when we see the world through our photographs rather than just looking at the picture before us.
and congratulations to all the 2009 graduands where ever you all are

More from David Bailey
Some time ago I said I would revisit the words of the great British fashion photographer David Bailey and true to my word I saw this....
"The first half of the 20th century belongs to Picasso and the second half is about photography. They said digital would kill photography because everyone can do it but they said that about the box brownie in 1885 when it came out. It makes photography interesting because everyone thinks they can take a picture."
WOW..................... not sure how I feel about my pix now as I'm a digital snapper!!..........whats your thoughts on the digital world?

Enjoy the moment ....
Now this one is really poignant, as I've done it so many times but not thought about enjoying the moment for what it really is....
"There will be times when you will be in the field without a camera. And, you will see the most glorious sunset or the most beautiful scene that you have ever witnessed. Don't be bitter because you can't record it. Sit down, drink it in, and enjoy it for what it is! " ~DeGriff
Enjoy the moment eh

A Passing Thought for the Day
Being a little philosophical in these gloomy days of the economic down turn I saw this and thought it might bring a smile
“A person is neither whole nor healthy without the memories of photo albums. They are the storybook of our lives. They provide a nostalgic escape from the tormented days of the present.”
Get the photo album out and dive in to the memories or better still get out with the camera and take a few more memories for the future
Have a great day .............

Maui Update - Whoo Hoo
Wow, just returned from the Hawaiian Island of Maui and spent an early morning (yes, left at 1.30am) photographing the fantastic sunrise at the top of the Heleakela Crater at 10023ft above sea level.
Early Hawaiians applied the name Haleakalā ("house of the sun") to the summit area only, most likely because from the west side of the island, the sun could be seen rising up over the eastern side of the mountain. In Hawaiian folklore, the depression at the summit of Haleakalā was home to the grandmother of the demigod Māui. According to the legend, Maui's grandmother helped him capture the sun and force it to slow its journey across the sky in order to lengthen the day. In modern times, Haleakalā has become synonymous with the entire East Maui volcano.
As I said we had to leave really early at 1.30am to make the 2 and a half hour drive up the crater to see the sunrise at 5.42am. The drive was a little precarious in the dark as the roads were a little narrow and the drop a long way if you drove too near the edge...............but well worth the long and slow drive to the top.
Anyway more panoramas will be uploaded to the web site soon

Whoo Hoo....Ichiro in full glory
I'm not going to estol the virtues of this new masterpiece from Nikon as I'm not a tester and reviewer of camera hardware so will leave that to others more qualified than me, but for one of the best independent reviews on Nikon cameras see Thom Hogan's reviews and for the Nikon D700 see the link below
http://www.bythom.com/nikond700review.htm)

Anyway we now have our hero of the baseball ...Ichiro in glorious full frame mega pixel up on the blog...........with many more to follow soon...........mmmmmmmm lost yesterday at the LA Angles 8 - 0 ouch but claimed the series 3 -1 some consolation I suppose.
Travelling again later in the week ..........yeah it's a hard life but should bring many more great pictures back to upload from the new acquisition.

Go Mariners 1-0 against TB Rays..Shame about the pictures!
Well having returned from the ancestral home in the UK a couple of days ago now I thought I would get back into the American way of life and went to the Baseball yesterday in Seattle and saw the Mariners play against the Tampa Bay Rays. WOW, a great game unfolded with the Mariners scoring the opening and only run of the day with the second ball of the first innings ..... great hit from Ichiro Suzuki........... go Mariners, well for awhile at least as we lead the AL 10-6.
Well, you ask what has all this got to do with Photography and FotoEngineering. Well actually quite a lot in fact as as always I take my trusty camera with me in an attempt to get the photo of the home run hit over the fence, or the slide into home plate confirming the win and I'm still waiting for that great shot to materialise, OH well one day perhaps. I digress, so back to the blog in hand as the camera I took to the game was in fact a nice new shiny Nikon D700, yes finally gone FX, full frame and what a difference a bigger sensor makes to the quality of the picture it takes.
Only one set back with this amazing new camera is that my Digital Asset Management (DAM) software cant read the new Nikon RAW format (NEF)..................Bummer eh. Well it begs the question as to why the camera manufacturers keep changing the formats with each new camera they produce!!..............its obvious I suppose as technology is moving on and the new FX (full frame) format is so different to it predecessor the DX format and requires different processing capabilities to make it "develop" the picture from digital dots to a picture.
What annoys me is that the software and DAM developers don't produce the Camera Raw files to retrospectively add to older versions of their software, yeah yeah you say that's how they make their money, but its still a pain and another expense after paying for your nice new shiny camera.
So the picture of our hero of the baseball (Ichiro Suzuki) cant be shown today in this blog because I cant download it, process it or crop it to the format I want to show it on the blog or web site.......................what a bummer!!

Off Travelling Again.......
I'm off travelling again tomorrow, actually back to the ancestral home in England. I'm only away for a week including all the flying from Seattle via Amsterdam to Bristol, but still not actually looking forward to all the jet lag and aggravations that the airlines, TSA, Customs and immigration etc can cause the travelling public let alone the travelling photographer.
I'm actually travelling light this trip and not going to take a lot of pictures however, I will as always be carrying my trusty Nikon P6000 in case anything does catch my eye and with the great GPS facility I will always know where the shot was taken so I can return at a later date with an arm full of cameras and lenses and get the shot in all its megapixel glory. Well actually the P6000 has a mega load of pixels so perhaps a blow up is in order to see how good it really is.
Anyway no blogs for a week but hopefull loads of material to blog about upon return
